Quick Start

5 Things First-Time Visitors Should Know

  1. Seasons are reversed. December to February is summer; June to August is winter – and the tropical north has a wet and a dry season instead.
  2. The coast is endless. Australia has more than 10,000 beaches – always swim between the flags. See the best beaches.
  3. Distances are huge. Sydney to Perth is about a 4.5-hour flight, so plan regions, not the whole country.
  4. The sun is strong. UV levels are among the highest in the world – hat, sunscreen and water every day.
  5. Biosecurity is strict. Declare all food, plants and animal products on arrival or risk heavy fines.
