Northern Territory · Dry season
Waterfalls, wetlands and rock art galleries tens of thousands of years in the making – six days by 4x4 from Darwin.

Experience the wild and ancient "Top End" of Australia on this 6-day 4x4 adventure from Darwin. Explore the vast floodplains and ancient rock art galleries of Kakadu National Park, a place of immense natural and cultural value. Take a cruise on the Yellow Water Billabong to spot saltwater crocodiles and abundant birdlife. Cool off in the crystal-clear swimming holes and waterfalls of Litchfield National Park. This is a trip for the true adventurer.
Kakadu is one of Australia’s largest national parks at almost 20,000 km², and one of only a few places on the World Heritage List for both natural and cultural values. We travel only in the dry season (May–October), when warm days, cool nights and open tracks make the 4x4 routes possible. Groups are small, your guide drives every kilometre, and you sleep in a mix of comfortable hotels and safari-style tented camps.
Six days, about 1,100 km of road and track, all driven by your guide.
Your 4x4 driver-guide collects you from your Darwin hotel at about 7 am. After roughly 120 km (1.5 hours) you reach Litchfield National Park and the field of magnetic termite mounds, aligned north–south to control their temperature. Swim at Florence Falls and in the tiered pools of Buley Rockhole – both managed swimming areas – and finish with a sunset drink at camp.
An early swim at Wangi Falls (when the ranger has declared it open) and a stop at Tolmer Falls lookout. Then it is the long road east: about 330 km (4 hours) into Kakadu National Park. In the late afternoon you board the included Yellow Water Billabong cruise at Cooinda for two hours among saltwater crocodiles, jabirus, whistling ducks and sea eagles as the light turns gold.
Begin at the Aboriginal cultural centre near Cooinda, where Bininj and Mungguy explain seasons, kinship and bush foods. Then the real 4x4 adventure: about 60 km of unsealed track (around 2 hours) to Jim Jim Falls, with a 1 km boulder scramble to the plunge pool beneath 200-metre cliffs. A boat shuttle and boardwalk lead to Twin Falls, where swimming is not permitted. The track usually opens from around June, subject to Parks Australia; earlier in the season we visit Maguk gorge instead.
Drive north to Burrungkuy, also known as Nourlangie, and walk the 1.5 km loop past the Anbangbang rock shelter, used by people for thousands of years, and the vivid painting of Namarrgon, the Lightning Man. Climb to Gunwarrddehwarrde Lookout for a view over the escarpment, then continue to Jabiru and an afternoon by the hotel pool.
A morning at the Bowali Visitor Centre, then on to Cahills Crossing on the East Alligator River, the border with Arnhem Land, where crocodiles often gather on the rising tide (watch only from the viewing platform). In the late afternoon explore Ubirr: galleries of x-ray style fish and turtles, a painting of a thylacine and the Rainbow Serpent, then climb to the Nadab lookout for sunset over the floodplain.
Stop at Mamukala Wetlands, where thousands of magpie geese gather late in the dry season, and at Fogg Dam on the Arnhem Highway. You arrive back in Darwin at about 3 pm after 250 km (3 hours). On Thursday and Sunday evenings, the Mindil Beach Sunset Market is a fine way to end the trip.
The largest living reptile; big males exceed 5 metres. Yellow Water and Cahills Crossing offer safe, close views.
Kakadu records around 280 bird species – roughly a third of Australia’s total – from jabirus and jacanas to white-bellied sea eagles.
Agile wallabies graze the woodland edges at dawn, while short-eared rock-wallabies hide among the Ubirr outcrops.
Look for frill-necked lizards and goannas on warm tracks, and archerfish spitting at insects in the billabongs.

Kakadu is the country of the Bininj in the north and the Mungguy in the south, whose connection to this land stretches back tens of thousands of years. The park is jointly managed by its Traditional Owners and Parks Australia, and more than 5,000 art sites have been recorded here – some thought to be up to 20,000 years old.
Near the Arnhem Land border, Ubirr’s shelters hold famous x-ray paintings showing the bones and organs of fish, turtles and wallabies, alongside images of the Rainbow Serpent and a long-extinct thylacine.
At the Anbangbang gallery, Namarrgon the Lightning Man is painted with the band of lightning that runs from his head to his feet – he is said to bring the storms of the build-up and wet season.
Please stay on boardwalks, never touch the art and respect closures of sites for cultural reasons.

Only where signs and rangers allow. Saltwater crocodiles live in rivers, billabongs and the sea across the Top End. Your guide only takes you to managed swimming areas that are surveyed and declared open by park staff, and you should never swim anywhere else.
They are permanent safari tents on raised platforms with real beds and linen, fans or power, and nearby bathrooms. No camping gear is needed.
A moderate level of fitness is enough. The most demanding section is the 1 km boulder scramble at Jim Jim Falls; you can wait at the beach instead if you prefer.
Yes, at the public galleries such as Ubirr and Burrungkuy, unless signs say otherwise. Never touch the paintings, as skin oils damage them, and ask before photographing people.
Dry-season departures are limited and the tented camps are small. Send us your preferred dates and we will confirm a seat in the 4x4 within one business day.
